Should I put my recyclables in a trash bag?


No, please do not put your recyclables in a trash bag. During the sorting process, items located in a trash bag end up in the landfill rather than being recycled. This is because most of the time when items arrive at the recycling center, the bags are full of trash. Depending on the items inside of a trash bag lead to contamination of reclycable materials and harm to the machinery.




Do I have to live within Oglethorpe County to take my recyclables to a drop off location?


No, we accept recylcables from any individuals EXCEPT for tires.




Do you accept scrap metal and electronics?


Yes, only at the C&D Landfill location.




Does the recycling depatment accept tires?


Yes, only at the C&D Landfill Location. This service is for Oglethorpe County residents only due to State Law. Please have proof residence, such as Driver License, Utility Bill, or Vehicle Registration. There is a cost associate with recycling tires: Passenger Vehicle Tire: $2 per tire
1 Ton Truck Tire: $5 per tire
Semi-Truck Tire: $8 per tire

Is it possible to weigh my trailer/truck before and after for finding the weight of produce or a scrapped car?


Yes, at the C&D Landfill location. There is a $5 dollar charge for the service, This cost helps cover the maintenance of the weigh scale. *Note: Payment through Cash or Check Only





This is a small glimpse into the process of when Oglethorpe County recyclables are sent to the processing and sorting center in Athens-Clarke County.

Recycling Management includes hauling and removing recycle material from the recycling drop-off centers within in the county to the recycling sorting center located in Athens-Clarke County. 

Public Works Garden Project

The Oglethorpe County Public Works Department built a garden using material destined for the landfill or recycling center. These items included: trees, wire, metal poles, water sprinkler, tires. The compost was donated from Athens-Clarke Public Works Department from their compost facility. 

CHaRM Facility

The Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials is located in Athens-Clarke County. This is a one stop drop for items that can't be accepted by Oglethorpe County Public Works Department.

Recyclable material is processed and sorted into different commodities. The Athens-Clarkes Recycling Center is unique in that they send most of there items to domestic manufacturers. Some of this recyclable product is used to create new vehicles, asphalt, playground mulch, and much more. The manufacturing of these products helps ensure the continuation of employment for domestic and local jobs.
